In this brief documentary I trace the origins of Gypsy Jazz in early 20th Century Paris, with its roots in The Tzigane music of the Cabarets Russe, the Manouche musicians working in Bals Musette, and the Jazz Clubs of the 1920's and 30's. Figures such as the Ferret Brothers, Gusti Malha and Poulette Castro were all important in the creation of Gypsy Jazz, but it was Django Reinhardt's partnership with Stephane Grappelli, and the support of Charles Delauney of the Hot Club de France, which brought this distinctive form of Jazz to the attention of the general public.
Following Django's death in 1953, the music almost disappeared, but figures such as Parotte Bousquet, Tchan Tchou Vidal, Shnuckenack Reinhardt, Hans'che Weiss and Titi Winterstein kept it alive through to the 1970's, when a revival began with Fapy Lafertin and his group Waso. A new generation of Gypsy musicians, including The Rosenberg Trio, Birelli Legrene and Angelo Debarre inspired non Gypsies to take up the music, to the extent where there are now bands playing Gypsy Jazz throughout the world, and a healthy circuit of gigs and festivals.
