"It's important because we want to maintain the infrastructure of Indian Rock Dam so when we need it, it's there. It operates as it should." 🏰 As we enter May and the buildup to #DamSafetyDay at the end of the month, get to know Steve, head dam operator at our Indian Rock Dam (three miles upstream from York, PA), and the routine maintenance underway to ensure mitigated flood risk to a downstream drainage area of 94 square miles.

Indian Rock Dam is an earth and rock structure 1,000 feet long rising 83 feet above the streambed, with a side-channel spillway and gated outlet conduit in the right abutment. The normally dry reservoir area has a storage capacity of 28,000 acre-feet (9.1 billion gallons) at spillway crest.
