Stop seeking everyone’s advice.

Top 10 best advice for entrepreneurs, Best things to do now to retire early, Advice to my 20 year old self. Etc etc etc

If you’re like me, you want be successful and forge your own path. In pursuit of this, the strategy I used was learn all the lessons from successful entrepreneurs and consolidate them to create the perfect way to move forward

However, after binging on hours of advice videos, I realized i'm still just as lost and clueless as before. I had a head full of information but no clear avenues to pursue. Advice varied from one person to another, philosophies changed and contradictions were common.

Let’s think about why this occurs. Advice, on a basic level is a sum of people’s individual life and experiences. Everything a person has been through, their successes, failures, upbringing, community, culture etc etc. Every single day a person lives, their experience of that day shapes them hence any advice people give you is normative. Normative is defined as something that is opinion based rather than fact based. The advice they give is based on their own interpretation of the world and their own experiences. Humans are unique and this has been proven, what one person may think is a good idea, another person may think is not. This has been demonstrated time and time again as there are always supporters and haters in the world. No product, service, business, philosophy or religion has 100% agreement.

Understanding this, thinking that someone's advice is the key to success and the correct way to do things is just not true. For people consuming this advice for the purposes of improvement, it presents an interesting dilemma. If everyone’s advice is based on their personal timeline, it means all advice is in essence, incorrect. Your personal circumstances are so varied & the data points are so vast, the chances of someone’s advice being 100% accurate for you is pretty much impossible. If you add into it further nuances such as stage of life, responsibilities, personal character and other personal psychology traits, the match is impossible to find.

However, it can be argued that there is good advice and I’d have to agree with you but the challenge is how do you decide which advice is good and which isn’t. Filtering advice can be difficult and time consuming. A strategy that I am starting to use is to stop seeking advice and focus on learning more fact based knowledge. Things that have been tested and proven like the Laws of Physics, Maths, Economics and Psychology. Use this knowledge to build your foundation and interpret them in your own unique way to find what you think is the right way for you to proceed. We as humans relate to other humans but when it comes to looking at ways to be successful, no one else's journey is the same as yours so listening to others for advice can be counterproductive since you're attempting to follow and do what worked for them rather than what will work for you taking into consideration your unique life experiences and your unique interpretations. Follow your own advice, this way, anything you come up with, will take into consideration the extremely complex and numerous nuances of your life which affect the chances of success. Does that mean that your own advice will be correct all the time? Absolutely not, but the process of trying, failing and learning will give you a deeper understanding of yourself and hence allow you to form better plans to execute.

A useful video to watch on this is one by Pursuit of Wonder - 'The Best Life Advice You’ve Ever Heard is Probably Wrong' which outlines how everyones advice is correct, for them, but may not be for you. Everyone is right in their own way but this is not universal. Find your own truth and that may help you achieve your goals. There is no one size fits all, there are no secrets to success and there is definitely not just one way to become successful.

Quick Disclaimer: This video is purely my opinion and is based on my understanding and interpretation of Philosophy, Economics, Business & Psychology.
