This is a short video of a fairly simple jig I built to help me with a puzzle box I'm building. For this box I need to cut one piece of wood in such a way that when I bring them back together the saw cut will be invisible. A Japanese saw is perfect for this because the saw kerf is very thin.

The only problem is that in order for the grain to match up when I bring the two pieces back together I need to ensure the cut is very precise so as to not require very much clean up. If I were to cut the pieces I need by hand there's a possibility for my cut to wander, which will require more time at the shooting board straightening the cut out and thus removing more material. As a result, when the pieces are brought back together it'll be clear from looking at the grain that the two pieces have been cut, especially when dealing with a small piece of wood that'll be under close inspection.

My solution was to build this simple jig that has two fences. One for the piece being cut to butt up against and another for the saw that'll run perpendicular to the fence stop. The key to this jig is recessing magnets along the saw fence so that as I cut the saw remains straight and perpendicular to the fence.

I've gotten to use it a lot so far and I have been quite pleased with the results!
