Learn how to replace an air filter using these detailed instructions and video for 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014 Subaru Outback models. Replacing your Outback’s air filter can help improve engine performance and fuel economy, and maintaining regular air filter changes can help your car run its best. You can consult your 2010 to 2014 Subaru Outback’s owner’s manual for the manufacturer recommended replacement interval, which is normally between 15,000 and 30,000 miles. Your Subaru Outback’s air filter helps collect and remove contaminants, pollen, and more from the outside air before it reaches your vehicle’s engine. Replacing the air filter in your 2010 to 2014 Subaru Outback is a straightforward and routine maintenance task that can improve gas mileage and overall performance. It is advised that you replace the air filter in your Outback every 15,000 to 30,000 miles, but your Subaru’s owner’s manual includes the manufacturer’s maintenance recommendation. If you frequently drive in especially dusty, polluted, or extreme environments, it may also be a good idea to replace your air filter more frequently than recommended. Signs that you may need a new air filter include odd engine noises, misfiring, poor fuel economy, or if you smell gas when starting your Outback. This in-depth video and instructions from O’Reilly Auto Parts can help you replace the air filter on your 2010 to 2014 Subaru Outback for a vehicle that performs as it should.

Park on a level surface… and pop the hood.
You’ll see the air filter housing to your left toward the front of the engine bay.
Use your 8mm socket to loosen the clamp on the large hose.
Gently work this hose off of the housing.
Disconnect the connector from the mass air flow and intake air temperature sensor and remove the clip.
Release the two clips on top of the housing… and pull the two halves apart.
This will give you access to the air filter inside.
Carefully remove the old air filter from the housing.
