Mediation begins way before the mediation day itself. If you want to give the parties the best experience and the best chance of negotiating an agreement then there's a lot you can do, as the mediator, to prepare the ground. Preparing for mediation will often involve a pre-mediation phase which can involve intake calls with each side in advance to get some background to the dispute. This is also a chance for the mediator to build rapport with the parties and or their legals advisors. It's also a chance to assess the suitability of the dispute for mediation.
