The original "1989" was Taylor's exploration of POP and a foray into 1980s synth-pop. The re-recorded version adds five songs, "slut" continues the salty sea breeze-like rhythm of "This Love", and "say don't go" has the unique bright melody of "1989". NTWDT and ‘’Suburban Legends" make up the lack of synthwave. "Is It Over Now" and "out of the woods" are connected together to form a complete world view of “1989”.
Perhaps for Taylor herself, "1989" is not an album that looks back to the past and pays homage to the retro music of the 1980s. Instead, this is an album about living in the present and looking toward the future, just like the seagull on the album cover: unfettered and flying freely.
