This video will teach you techniques for pruning avocado trees to keep them small by encouraging low branching. The avocado tree in this video is a Type A semi dwarf avocado variety called a Lila Avocado and it is an ideal variety to grow in smaller yards and small spaces.

Pruning avocados is best done while the tree is young to achieve the desired shape early. Avocado pruning when young will allow the tree to recover quickly when they're most vigorous.

Because avocado trees grow in warm climates and are evergreen trees that lack a true dormancy period, when and how to prune avocado tree branches depends on your personal preferences.

The best tools for pruning avocado tree wood are sharp hand pruners for the smaller branches and a Japanese saw (AKA pull saw) to prune avocado branches larger than the width of your ring finger. Always clean your tools before pruning avocado plant material.
