If you head onto social media and type in Ligue Un it’s not hard to find several people calling it a farmers league. Only recently, the Lionel Messi fan club have busted out the phrase in droves, furious that PSG fans had the audacity to boo the Argentine maestro against Bordeaux! The insult claims that Ligue Un is a division of semi-professionals who farm in the day and play football by night. In short, it’s an allegation that the French topflight isn’t up to scratch.

This notion has been exasperated thanks to Paris Saint-Germain's stranglehold over the domestic game. Champions on 7 occasions since 2012, their overwhelming success and Qatari wealth has often cast a shadow on their domestic rivals who struggle for recognition or respect. Le Parisiens own failings in the Champions League has emboldened Ligue Un’s critics too, with the club being dumped out in the last-16 4 times in the past 6 years.
