Having an air vent is necessary for gravity dependent plumbing which is all DWV plumbing. And DWV pipes are thinner than other PVC because this plumbing does not involve pressure. If you have an island counter with a sink, there may be no air vent line for the drainage, which is why you would install a Loop Vent.
