The Memphis Grizzlies are allegedly boosting Jaren Jackson Jr’s stats at home games.
A Reddit user by the name of AdMassive6666 made a deep dive into Jaren’s defensive stats and found some pretty suspicious things. He averages 2.2 blocks on the road, which is still very good, but when he plays at home, in Memphis, he averages a whopping 4.1 blocks. And same goes for steals, 0.7 per game on the road and 1.4 at home. Both stats double when he plays at home. And if you think it’s because of his minutes played, you’d be wrong because he plays almost the exact same amount of minutes in away and home games.
AdMassive6666 went through some Memphis home games in this past season and found MANY instances where Jaren Jackson was credited with a block or steal that either his teammate did or never even happened. Here are some examples, [Example 1], JJ was credited with a block here even though Zion didn’t even attempt a shot, [Example 2], Desmond Bane picks up the ball after a bad pass and JJ is once again credited with a steal.
Memphis has a history of doing this sort of thing as back in the 1990s a former statistician for the Grizzlies admitted to boosting Nick van Exel’s assist numbers at home games.
But has it all been blown a bit out of proportion? A youtube channel that goes by the name of toofortoo made an amazing video going through each recorded steal and block, and concluded that only 4 blocks and 4 steals were not the correct call. 4, out of his 66 blocks at home games, only 4 shouldn’t of counted. If you subtract the incorrect blocks, he still leads the league in blocks per game. Jaren Jackson Jr. is still my pick for DPOY.
