The film follows the creation and development of a highly advanced humanoid robot with artificial intelligence named Chappie. Chappie is created by Deon Wilson (played by Dev Patel), a brilliant scientist working for Tetravaal. Deon steals a damaged police robot slated for destruction and installs a new experimental AI program into it, giving birth to Chappie.
