Weekly Economic Outlook: Andrew Hilton's take on geopolitics, Roe vs Wade, central banks, inflation, recession and financial markets...

Why you should watch: Another brutal week - in Ukraine, in financial markets and even in the 'corridors of power' from Westminster to Berlin to Washington. Which way will Putin jump? And will 'hawks' in Washington let him dial down the war even if he wanted to? Meanwhile, sanctions are being tightened, inflation is still rising, the risk of recession is growing (at least in Europe) - and China is ready and willing to pick up the pieces. At least, it would be if it weren't engaged in shooting itself in the foot with its 'zero Covid' folly. Not a pretty picture - and one might assume that equities will get the message. Still, their capacity to take it on the chin and bounce back makes most economists extremely cautious about predicting the sell-off that must come at some stage. Politically, the big development is in the US, where the Supreme Court's (apparent) decision to strike down Roe vs. Wade offers the (super-cynical) Democratic leadership a chance to rescue the midterms from under the noses of the deeply divided Republicans.

Andrew Hilton is the former director of the CSFI, which he ran for close to three decades. He is an economist, a former financial journalist, and a former World Banker, educated in the UK and US.
