Charlotte de Polignac, who is jeopardized by her mother's agreement to marry her to the Duke de Guiche. Charlotte, not knowing what would happen to her, loses all reason, and commits suicide, jumping from one of the towers of the Palace of Versailles. She dies without knowing that she had a sister called Rosalie, who is in fact Lady Oscar's protegée. She grew a white rose in a tower as a symbol of her friendship with Lady Oscar.
