Over the past 20 years or so, Toyota and its management have made it abundantly clear that they are not big fans of electric vehicles.

In fact, you may be surprised to know that Tesla, Nissan, General Motors, Ford, Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, Hyundai, Kia, and other automakers all introduced electric vehicles before Toyota did.

This may seem odd given the automaker's image as a pioneer in green vehicles. As Toyota likes to remind us, the Prius' arrival in 1997 marked a turning point as it was the first mass-produced hybrid battery-and-gas vehicle alternative for drivers who were concerned about the environment. It was even this car that inspired rivals like General Motors and Honda to release their own electrified motors.

However, as the car industry shifts to a battery-powered future, the Japanese automaker has lost some of its longtime fans as a result of its hesitation to invest in all-electric vehicles.

This is in contrast to other automakers, including General Motors, Volkswagen, and others, who pledged to invest billions of dollars to build all-electric vehicles that don't require gas-powered engines.

Despite Toyota's plans to become carbon neutral by 2050, the strategy has pitted the biggest automaker in the world against a number of rivals and cast doubt on its dedication to a sustainable future for the industry.

In today's video, we explain why this corporation has been insistent about staying out of the electric vehicle sector.
