When I first started watching Frieren, it seemed like the perfect show. I mean, it was such a breath of fresh air among all of the isekai and video-game style anime we're inundated with year after year. That's why I, among others, were pretty disappointed once it started to veer towards more typical fantasy fodder.

We should've never doubted it.

For Frieren's exam arc is not a departure from what made the show so good, rather, it goes beyond that. Almost as if chiding us the viewer for becoming so attached in the first place.
