Cultural leaders and creatives from the documentary short "Below Surface" (Mary Lake Polan, Lukas Hauser, Linda P. Fried, Dayle Haddon) gather on February 28, 2024 with moderator Lesley Jane Seymour to address the film and its focus on the aging process. Topics include: what made Polan decide to make a film about the elderly participants in the YMCA "aquafit class" that she had joined; recent changes which have led to the spotlighting of older women as models for the fashion and beauty industry; if society's attitudes about aging are evolving; how individuals have been historically segregated according to age groups; ways to make seniors aware that they still have value; if loneliness has become an epidemic in the United States; and the panelists' reactions to New York Governor Kathy Hochul's intention to design a master plan on aging and well-being.
