Scientists and citizen-scientists lined Turnagain Arm on Saturday, September 15 to count Cook Inlet beluga whales. NOAA Fisheries, The Alaska Zoo, and other organizations held the event to increase public understanding of belugas. Designated as an endangered species in 2008, the population of Cook Inlet belugas has failed to recover, even with increased protections.
