These detailed instructions and video walk you through an air filter replacement on 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 Toyota Prius models. Replacing your Prius’ air filter can help improve engine performance and fuel economy, and should be part of your regular maintenance routine to help ensure long-lasting performance. The owner’s manual for your 2010 to 2015 Toyota Prius can provide the recommended replacement interval. However, if you notice a dirty or clogged filter, decreased gas mileage, or poor engine performance, you may need to change the engine air filter more often to keep your car performing its best.

The air filter in your Toyota Prius helps trap and eliminate contaminants from the outside air before it reaches your vehicle’s engine. Replacing the air filter in your 2010 to 2015 Toyota Prius is a simple routine maintenance task that can improve gas mileage and overall performance. It is commonly recommended that you replace the air filter in your Prius every 10,000 to 20,000 miles, but your Toyota’s owner’s manual includes the manufacturer’s maintenance recommendation. If you frequently drive in especially dusty or polluted environments, it may also be a good idea to replace your engine air filter more frequently than recommended. Signs that you may need a new air filter include odd engine noises, misfiring, poor fuel economy, or if you smell gas when starting your Prius. Make replacing your 2010 to 2015 Toyota Prius’ air filter easier with these step-by-step instructions and video from O’Reilly Auto Parts.

Park on a level surface… and open the hood.
You’ll find the air filter housing at the front of the engine bay.
The lid to the housing is secured by two clips.
Disengage the clips… and slip the lid out of the two tabs toward the back.
Lift the lid up… and take the old filter from the housing.
Clean out any leaves or debris from inside.
Set your new filter in place, making sure its rubber seal is properly seated all the way around the edge of the housing.
Put the lid back in place, slipping the two tabs back into their slots… and refasten the clips.
Close the hood.
