Minions: The Rise of Gru is a computer-animated action comedy film released in 2022 by Illumination and distributed by Universal Pictures. It is the follow-up to the spin-off prequel Minions (2015) and the fifth installment in the Despicable Me franchise overall. The film is directed by Kyle Balda, with Brad Ableson and Jonathan del Val serving as co-directors. It stars Taraji P. Henson, Michelle Yeoh, RZA, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Lucy Lawless, Dolph Lundgren, Danny Trejo, Russell Brand, Julie Andrews, and Alan Arkin, as well as Steve Carell as Gru and Pierre Coffin as the Minions.

Set after the events of the first film in the 1970s, a 12-year-old Gru is growing up in the suburbs. Gru, a fan of the Vicious 6 supervillains, devises a plan to become evil enough to join them. When the Vicious 6 depose their leader, legendary fighter Wild Knuckles, Gru interviews to join them.
It doesn't go well, and things only get worse when Gru steals a precious stone from them with the help of Kevin, Stuart, Bob, Otto, and the other Minions, and finds himself suddenly the mortal enemy of the apex of evil. On the run, Gru and the Minions will seek advice from an unlikely source, Wild Knuckles himself, and learn that even bad guys need a little help from their friends.
