The Green Line extension or GLX will add two branches to the northern end of the Green Line which currently has 4 branches on its southern end. The Union Square branch will only include 1 station, and the Medford Branch will add 5 stations to the system. The Union Square branch is planned to open in September 2021, and the Medford branch is scheduled to open in December 2021.

With the opening of the Green Line Extension the new service pattern will see E Branch trains running from Heath Street to Medford/Tufts. D Riverside trains will be extended along the short 1 station Union Square Branch. C Cleveland Circle trains currently terminate at North Station, but the line will be shortened to Government Center, with the opening of the GLX. Lastly, the B Boston College branch, which currently terminates at Park Street, will be extended and will also terminate at Government Center.
