Environmental Justice Storytelling for Impact | Panel Discussion

Published On Premiered Sep 1, 2023

One of the greatest barriers to overcome in EJ conversations is learning how to effectively communicate nuanced issues to any audience: the public, politicians, corporate actors, and academics. In connection with Intersectional Environmentalist, The Uproot Project, and the People's Climate Innovation Center, this day-long event series explores that intersection; how does one become an effective communicator? What are the modes available to young people to affect change through their voices and diverse media?

This panel discussion was comprised of the following participants:
Rachel Ramirez – Climate Reporter for CNN, Uproot Project Steering Committee Member
Dr. Maya Kapoor – Science Writer and Director of the Journalism Minor at NC State University, Uproot Project Steering Committee Member
Melba Newsome – Independent North Carolina Environmental Justice Journalist, Uproot Member

The Duke Human Rights Center at FHI, the Dewitt Wallace Center for Media and Democracy, and the EJ Oral History Project at Duke hosted the Environmental Justice Storytelling for Impact Summit in the Fuqua School of Business's Geneen Auditorium.

This event was part of a larger summit on environmental justice storytelling for Duke Earth Month 2023. If you'd like to view the associated events, click the links below.
