Suspension terms and descriptions

SPUA leaf SPrings mounted Under Axle. All sj413 were factory sprung under.

SPOA Over Axle. The most common lift done.

OTT over the top steering kit
a tie rod and drag link raised higher as the axle is pushed away from frame. OTT can be a DIY Mercedes arms, stock tie rod and drag link kit. To a Heavy Cast machined steel arm on both knuckles and 1 ton ball joints.

STICTION when spring eye bushings are squeezed so tight between wings/shoes/shackles/missing links that the shackle can not move. Suspension is rigid. Car will lean one way or the other depending on which direction you turn and the body won’t come back to level by itself.

Jeep Wrangler YJ leaf springs 2.5” wide requiring wider shackles, shoes and 7” longer requiring relocation methods.

WINGS The 4 pair of plates under frame that accept the big eye of stock style leaf springs.

SHOES A wider bracket usually welded onto wings to accept a wider leaf spring. Also relocated big eye lower and farther back from factory leaf spring location.

MISSING LINK A folding lever (fulcrum pivot) that increases droop by changing a 3 point angle into a 3 point straight line, while relocating longer spring.

MISSING LINK STOP various methods used by different designers. Non metal to metal stops make far less noise.

4 Link A double triangulated system using 2 longer lower “links”. 2 shorter upper “links”. A good design will have minimum squat, minimum axle arc movement (dif moving out of center position), minimum axle creep (tire moving forward as it creeps up and forward).

3 Link A system consists of 2 lower and a sideways panhard. Lower links have fixed uppers on them going to top of axle for camber. Some people also consider this a 2 link when using only
1 lower and 1 attached upper to axle for camber. Panhard bars introduce more axle arc but reduces axle creep.

1Link A one rotating pivot attached to the axle ends with a Panard. Axle can be fixed or have adjustable short uppers for camber.

POGOTRAC Only one in the world on the quinea pig. Incorporates limit strap as bump stop. Has Zero axle arc movement (dif stays centered) and zero axle creep.
