The valley stretches on for miles. A dramatic world of canyons, plains, river basins and forests as far as the eye can see. We're in Argentina, in what is now the province of Neuquen, on the western border with Chile. Large herds of large animals occupy the waterways and sandstone chasms of the Huincul formation, a Late Cretaceous locale of around ninety-five million years ago. As we travel at ground level, the ecosystem becomes more visibly intricate, complete with basking crocodilians and turtles piled up along the water's edge.

A nearby sandstone canyon demonstrates one of the more awe-inspiring landscapes of the Huincul Formation. Towering walls line up to the left and right of where we stand; trees sway in the flow of air speeding through the canyon wall, and the hot sun beats down on the dry rock. A small reptile suns itself on a nearby rock, seemingly oblivious to the fact it rests in the centre of the approach of one of the most spectacular sights in all of natural history.

Through the blustering wind, another noise can be picked up. Long, deep grunts and bellows from round the corner of the rock faces. These noises are loud and imposing, to the point where you can feel them resonating through your body. A herd of giants is approaching. As the sound culminates into a cacophony, you can see the first of the dinosaurs read its head round the corner of the canyon wall - the head, at first, looks obscenely small atop the lumbering, beam-like neck, the likes of which simply do not exist in modern nature. As the dinosaur turns the corner, you can see the true gravity of this animal - a colossal, bulky body blocks out the wall of the canyon in the background as a long, tapering tail gives way to more heads and more necks. The grunting and booming of footsteps are overpowering as a huge herd of Argentinosaurus reveals itself to be walking through the rocky canyon in search of new pastures. This is one of the largest animals ever to walk the earth - a true titan in a diverse land of other massive creatures.
