The current arc is the Cell Saga. The Cell Games arena has been destroyed. Goku has removed himself from the battle and in his place - Gohan is forced to fight the genetic monster known as Cell. However, as the fight barely begins, Gohan decides he doesn’t want to fight - he doesn’t want to give in to the anger that will give him the power to kill Cell once and for all.
Usually, this leads to Cell beating Gohan and the Z-fighters until he gets that power to emerge, but instead his instincts take him in a different direction. Perhaps it’s Gohan’s words that lack killing intent or perhaps it's Piccolo and Goku’s DNA causing him to feel like the boy needs to be protected. Whichever way you take it, Cell doesn’t retaliate. He’s just taken his first step in this journey called What if Cell turned good?
