Boris Johnson held a Downing Street press conference in an attempt to stabilise his premiership following the publication of the Sue Gray report into partygate.

Her investigation revealed repeated instances of staff flouting the Covid rules.

Asked if No 10 officials had lied about partygate to journalists when they said no parties had taken place, Mr Johnson said: "I certainly don't think that they set out to deceive you about that but plainly if you look at what Sue has found... that simply wasn't right. We have got to accept it and we have got to recognise that mistakes were made."
