The photographers, photojournalists and reporters presented in this clip worked for Life Magazine, the great photo journal. Back in its day, tens of millions of Americans got it delivered to their homes each week and looked at – I should say stared at – every photograph. Life Magazine photographers were known as the best and the war photographers took pictures that gave a feeling for wars like World War II and Korea and other conflicts that were almost three-dimensional. The photographs were not just momentary snapshots but made you think and feel.

I got to make a one hour primetime television documentary for the 50th anniversary of Life Magazine and I interviewed their 16 greatest photojournalists. This clip presents several war photographers including one who focused primarily on refugees. Although I have made many documentaries and gone to many locations in the USA and around the world as a documentary filmmaker, I never went to Vietnam although many of my colleagues did. I have deep respect for the courage that it took and when I watch prime time news presenting the war in Ukraine, I again feel a deep respect for the journalists who risk their lives to tell stories sometimes reporting from battlefield front lines, showing viewers stories and people that we would never see were it not for their efforts.

If this clip intrigues you and you search the words "Life Magazine" on my YouTube channel you will find other clips from my documentary and the complete documentary itself. If you are a photojournalist or wanting to be one, these top-of-the-line photographers will give you insights into why they did what they did and how they did it so well.
