In 1986, the U.S. Forest Service launched one of the most bizarre and expensive experimental aircraft ever conceived: the Helistat (PA-97). Designed to lift massive loads using a hybrid of a blimp and four military helicopters, it was supposed to revolutionize logging, heavy cargo transport, submarine warfare... the sky was the limit. Instead, it was violently destroyed on its first untethered flight in a matter of seconds. By why? How did it get so far and what can we learn from its failure?
