In 1986, the U.S. Forest Service launched one of the most bizarre and expensive experimental aircraft ever conceived: the Helistat (PA-97). Designed to lift massive loads using a hybrid of a blimp and four military helicopters, it was supposed to revolutionize logging, heavy cargo transport, submarine warfare... the sky was the limit.
