Special episode! I met twin brothers Nathan and Jud Epting when they randomly showed up in front of my house in East Nashville, set up their easels and started painting the truck parked out front. We've since become good friends. We had what has been my favorite conversation on this podcast so far, discussing the parallels between plein air painting and musical performance, the challenge of knowing what to leave in and leave out, the value of painting the same object multiple times, the freedom and paralysis of being told you can do anything, good and bad days as an artist and the value in taking time off, the importance of consistency. In the last third of the podcast, we put several of the Eptings' paintings up on the screen and asked them to talk about each work in terms of its location, context, and perceived success.
