In a 1992 interview, Mr. Martino had this to say of the track: "I was one of the first people to do a record like that. The whole thing progressed after that, and if you hear 'Volare' against some of the later disco things, you wouldn't consider it a disco record at all. It was produced by Mike Curb, it was his idea. You know, that record didn't make it through the radio stations, but through disco dance halls. It broke out in Montreal, before the radio stations had started playing that type of music. It was being played in the discotheques, and they wanted a longer version of the song. So we went back into the studio and extended it from three minutes to eight minutes, and that's when it became a hit."

A big hit in many Euro countries, the song climbed to #24 in its native Italy, #3 in the Netherlands and #2 in Belgium. While reaching #33 and #9 in the U.S. Pop and Adult Contemporary Charts respectively, it (incredibly) failed to chart in the U.K.
