Überspielung & Bearbeitung einer 25cm-Schellackplatte aus eigener Sammlung

Die hier vorgestellte Platte hätte dem Erfinder des Saxophons sicherlich recht gut gefallen. Bringt sie sein Instrument schließlich in einen Kontext, den er (neben der Militärmusik) dafür vorgesehen hatte: die Verwendung des Saxophons-Klangs im sinfonischen bzw. kammermusikalischen Bereich. Dieser Wunsch des Belgiers Adolphe Sax ist in der Historie jedoch in großem Umfang nicht realisiert worden. Das Saxophon wurde in den 1920er bis 1940er Jahren praktisch zu „dem“ Symbol für Jazz und Tanzmusik.

Aber in der Emanzipationsgeschichte des Instruments gab es eben doch hin und wieder auch Hinwendungen zu „klassischem“ Repertoire. So geschehen auf vorliegender Platte im Jahr 1925 durch den amerikanischen Musiker Al Starita, der mit seinem Bruder Ray nach England ging und dort auch durch die Zusammenarbeit mit Jack Hylton bekannt wurde. Wir hören hier eine Musik, die sicherlich nicht zu den „ernsten“ Kompositionen zu zählen ist. Eher hat sie Saloncharakter, könnte immerhin auch von einer Violine dargeboten werden. Die Zielgruppe dürfte aber klar sein, wenn man bedenkt, dass die Platte im Oktober 1925 vom „Scottish Music Magazine“ vorgestellt wurde, das eher sinfonischer und historischer Musik verpflichtet war.

Al Starita spielt sein Altsax in „schön“ klingender Weise, ohne verschliffene oder vordergründig rhythmisierende Töne, ohne technische Mätzchen oder Jahrmarktseffekte. Das im Untertitel genannte kapriziöse Element wird hier gar nicht so sehr ausgeweitet. Es geht um Klang. Und den beherrscht Starita im gesamten Umfang der Komposition absolut perfekt. Interessanterweise gibt es eine Filmaufnahme des Liedes mit Al Starita von 1928, die in Kleinigkeiten (Klavier) abweicht:    • Al Starita - 'Lanette' (1928)  

Wenn man Al Staritas noch akustisch aufgenommene Columbia-Platte einer Soloplatte von Coleman Hawkins gegenüber stellt, findet man ein weites Spektrum der Möglichkeiten dieses modernen Instrumentes Saxophon, welches die Klangwelt der Musik im 20. Jahrhundert eindrucksvoll prägte.

The record presented here would certainly have pleased the inventor of the saxophone. It puts his instrument in a context he intended (in addition to military music): the use of the saxophone sound in symphonic or chamber music. However, this wish of the Belgian Adolphe Sax has not come true on a large scale. Between the 1920s and 1940s, the saxophone practically became a "symbol" for jazz and dance music.

But in the history of the emancipation of the instrument, there have always been opportunities when it comes to “classical” repertoire. This is what happened on the present record in 1925 by the American musician Al Starita, who went to England with his brother Ray and became known there through his collaboration with Jack Hylton. We hear music here that certainly cannot be counted among the “serious” compositions. It has more of a salon character and could also be played by a violin. The target group should be clear when you consider that the record was presented in October 1925 by "Scottish Music Magazine", which was more devoted to symphonic and historical music.

Al Starita plays his alto sax in a "beautiful" sounding way, without sloppy or ostensibly rhythmic tones, without technical antics or fairground effects. The capricious element mentioned in the subtitle is not expanded that much here. It's about sound. And Starita has mastered this absolutely perfectly in the entire scope of the composition. If you compare Al Starita's acoustically recorded Columbia with a solo record by Coleman Hawkins, you will find a wide range of possibilities on this modern instrument, the saxophone, which impressively shaped the sound world of music in the 20th century.
