Most people want to know what exercises they can do to relieve their sciatica pain. In my experience, it matters much less WHAT you do and instead HOW you do it is more important. One challenge for you today is to begin to think of using movement as medicine to resolve your pain.

This is contrary to the "do more, get better faster" sheet of exercise approach... which does not embrace the concept of "movement as medicine" at all.

For the sake of this conversation (and your healing moving forward), medicine = movement...

First- rather than taking many medications or pills at one time... let's begin with one exercise that feels safe and you know causes no adverse reactions. Begin with ONE safe, yummy motion. Mixing medications together results in weird reactions, one medication counteracting the other and so on... which creates confusion.

Second, once we have the one exercise- we can aim to optimize the movement prescription... which includes the DOSE (how much), FREQUENCY (how often), and TIMING (when you take it)...

Too little, and the exercise or medication won't be effective. Too much and you risk flaring things up or doing more than necessary.

Timing is an important element here, too...

Take your movement pill at a time that makes sense and correlates to your symptoms. If symptoms are worse in the morning... do it right before you get out of bed. If symptoms are worse at night... load up on your movement medicine in the afternoon.

Finally, if a medicine is working - don't change it!

Most people in pain have been led to believe that doing more = getting better faster... and so as soon as pain lessens, they want to know "what's next?"

Only once a movement stops working or makes you worse do you shift to another motion.

Instead of looking for more inputs/exercises... try minimizing what you're doing and think of exercise as using "movement as medicine."
