This part 2 of the antique "Camel Back" drill press restore
Be sure to watch Part 1 first.    • Beautiful Antique Drill Press Restora...

The vintage Century "repulsion start induction" motor fires up once again.
I was scared dismantling this motor in case i damaged it or could not get it back together but it is truly old school, made to last for sure. If you own one don't be afraid to take it apart.

When an electric motor like this starts, it requires a lot of torque to get it turning. Modern motors use a capacitor as part of the start cycle because it is cheap. That is normally hidden under a bulge on the side of the motor or underneath it. This one uses a mechanical mechanism instead. If you are interested - here is a technical explanation http://www.industrial-electronics.com...

I made the reassembly process look easy and it was, but i had to re-film it in several takes because certain parts have to be installed in order.

I am super pleased with my new switch !
I salvaged it from my old belt sander that had a burnt out motor.
This switch looks the part and has a cool electromagnetic latch. (relay)
The idea for the relay is that if you have a power failure during work, you don't need to remember to turn off the machine. When power is restored, the switch is already off.

The machine used to have a flat leather belt drive and back in the day, a big workshop would have had one beefy power source that powered a number of machines. When they were retired, people modified them with a dedicated motor. This motor might be old, but it is new compared to the drill press itself. You can still see the remnants of the speed changer and I forgot how it went and reassembled it two different ways. Left that part in the video. Neither ways are really wrong considering the part that attached to it is no longer there.

I won't sell it, (not unless I go broke or am offered a mint) but I tried to price one. Not only can i not find a picture of the same one anywhere, It is really hard to find one similar for sale.

Old Iron - love it.
