Today, in our sports encyclopedia series we will talk about Beirut Chess.
Beirut Chess is a modified version of chess that is played with few interesting exceptions.
The regular chess species and board is used to play the game.
The game follows all the same rules of chess except for these changes.
The basic objective of the game for each player is to blow up or checkmate the opponent player’s king.
At the beginning of the game, each player is required to discretely mark the bottom of any of their chess pieces other than the king.
The mark is made by putting a red dot beneath the chess piece.
The marked piece is known as the bomb carrier.
When the player’s turn arrives, instead of moving a piece they may say ‘BOOM’ and overturn their bomb carrier piece.
If a bomb carrier is overturned by the player, that piece along with any piece on every adjacent space, including their own pieces, are removed from the board.
The player is not allowed to look at the removed pieces of the opponent to inspect whether the opponent’s bomb carrier has been removed.
The player cannot blow up their bomb carrier if the outcome brings their own king into check.
All the other moves are executed according to regular chess and all the same, rules apply at every stage.
The first player that manages to checkmate or blow up their opponent’s king wins the game.
