If you ask Dr. Jethro Hu what keeps him up at night, he will likely answer with “how glioblastoma not only infiltrates all over the brain, but how different parts of the tumor are activated by different genetic alterations.”

In his lecture in the Metabolic Therapies for Cancer Symposium, Dr. Hu dives deep into the findings of a phase 1 trial of a 16-week ketogenic diet in combination with standard-of-care for patients with recently diagnosed glioblastoma.

The results of the study demonstrate that it is possible to use metabolic therapies to treat patients with cancer with the majority of patients were able to maintain ketosis 85% of the time. The ketogenic diet for glioblastoma patients was found to be safe and feasible. However, Dr. Hu does warn that it requires a lot from all parties involved including patients, caregivers, dietitians, and practitioners to manage therapeutic protocols well.

While the preliminary findings are promising for this small cohort of glioblastoma patients, results do vary. If you have any medical concerns, please speak with a medical professional.
