Coming up, two legends and world-class storytellers share the story of one of the biggest radio songs ever. These Eyes was the first big hit written by Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings of the Guess Who. Guitarist Randy Bachman went to pick up a girl for a date and she wasn’t ready, so he sat downstairs waiting, and there happened to be an old piano there, so he wrote this little song in a few minutes. He later took it over to the singer’s house who changed one key lyric… It put this legendary band on the map. As a classic of the late 60s and early 70s, both Randy and Burton tell the story of this classic rock standard.

We’ve had Randy Bachman on the show a few times and as you know he’s one of the best storytellers in rock. Well, today we have his counterpart Burton Cummings who wrote some of the greatest songs even while in THE GUESS WHO.

Obviously, known best for their Classic Rock mega-hit American Woman, they had 14 top 40 hits here in America. First, the band was called Chad Allan and the Reflections, and they recorded their first song by going into this studio and paying the janitor 35 bucks to go take a nap so that they had full rein of the studio. So they recorded a cover of a song by Johnny Kid and the Pirates called Shaking All Over.

When they sent it to the record labels, one loved it and wanted to release it, but the label told the band they had to change their name because there were already groups with the name the reflections and so they tried the name the expressions but that was taken too so according to Randy Bachman, when their label sent their single Shaking All over out they put it on a white label with the name guess who? So that’s how they got their name. It also didn’t hurt that some rumors started that the guess who was a mystery supergroup that had brian jones and George Harrison in the band. This led to their first hit. Then Chad Allan left the group and they stole Burton Cummings from a rival band called the Deverons. which broke up the only other great band in their area so the band got together and started writing music and getting their band in place…

and that’s where our story starts with both Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings sharing the story of the song that put the Guess Who on the map and has become one of the most played songs in radio history. These Eyes. It’s coming up next.
