As a kid growing up, we used the original Audubon Bird call, sort-of as a toy, somewhat to call to birds. I tried to see if i could make a few of my own. With the original call, the wood is birch, and the metal is zinc. I used pine and a hardwood from the yard, and aluminum.

There were a few tricks - mainly getting the right fit between the metal and wood. That friction causes the squeak or bird call noises.
