London Calling: financial services outlook with Barney Reynolds (Shearman & Sterling) & Ida Levine (Impact Investing Institute)

Why you should watch: Our panel wrestles with the two key issues of today for the City of London: digital assets policy and ESG disclosure and regulation. What can we expect from the recent Government announcements on regulating stablecoins, and promoting cryptocurrencies and other digital assets regulation? Is the government right to promote the UK as a basis for the digital asset industry? Does it matter if there is no international standard and each jurisdiction regulates the industry as it sees fit? Another major topic covered was on ESG disclosure, the role of the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB), the scope to limit greenwashing, the use of carbon offsets, the need for more robust data to inform sustainability policy, and pros and cons of market based solutions compared with prescriptive regulation.

Barney Reynolds is Global Head of the Financial Services Industry Group at Shearman and Sterling and is also a member of the firm's Executive Group. He is one of the leading financial institution practitioners. He specialises in banking and financial markets law and regulation, clearing, settlement, derivatives, asset management and insurance regulation.

Ida Levine is Board Director and Lead Expert Policy and Regulation at the Impact Investing Institute. She currently serves on the Board of the Investor Forum, and has previously held positions as Board Director, Senior Vice-President and Senior Counsel and Director of European Public Affairs at Capital Group and European Counsel at J.P. Morgan Investment Management.
