Humans need culture and community in the same way that fish need water.

In both cases, neither species is aware they are “swimming” in it, and it only becomes apparent how important it is when it is no longer present. And, in just the same way that taking a fish out of water is harmful for its health, it is also harmful to take humans out of their community and culture.

When these elements are absent, humans turn to substances to fill the hole. For example, indigenous tribal populations in Western Canada went from having almost a 0% rate of addiction to almost 100%, when their culture was decimated by European settlers.
