Lightyear is a computer-animated science fiction action-adventure film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It is a Toy Story film series spin-off that serves as an origin story for the fictional test pilot/astronaut character who inspired the Buzz Lightyear toy/action figure featured in the main films, and is presented as a blockbuster film within a film that the characters in Toy Story would watch. This idea was first explored in the 2000 direct-to-video film Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins, which served as the pilot for a spin-off television series, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command.

Angus MacLane co-wrote and directed the film, which stars Chris Evans as the title character's voice, as well as Keke Palmer, Peter Sohn, James Brolin, Taika Waititi, Dal Soules, Uzo Aduba, Mary McDonald-Lewis, Efren Ramirez, and Isiah Whitlock Jr. in supporting roles.
Lightyear is the story of a young astronaut named Buzz Lightyear who, after being marooned on a hostile planet with his commander and crew, attempts to find his way back home through space and time while also dealing with a threat to the universe's safety. After completing work on Finding Dory (2016), MacLane, a science fiction fan, approached Pixar with the idea of making a film about Buzz Lightyear.

The animators wanted to give the film a "cinematic" and "chunky" look to evoke the sci-fi films that the director grew up watching. The film's score was written by Michael Giacchino.
The film premiered on June 8, 2022, at El Capitan Theatre, and is set to be released theatrically in the United States on June 17, 2022, in RealD 3D, 4DX, Dolby Cinema, and IMAX formats.
