The creators never set out to jam-pack How to Train Your Dragon with easter eggs but the ones they did add, for the most part carry the plot forwards. First, you’ve got your mini movie references like a Top Gun homage, a voice from Godzilla, a weird Shrek inclusion, an invention from Back to the Future, some direct ripping off of Lilo and Stitch and Star Wars. They were very careful in who they picked to play their voices. Game of Thrones played a role in casting and so did the audio books! And the Game of Thrones inspiration went further than Kit Harrington. In the show, there’s a beautiful little detail. Did you spot what was in the Dreamworks logo at the beginning of the movie? On top of referencing all of these other classic movies, How to Train Your Dragon kept adding beautiful little details too. Like the Bewilderbeast being forgiven and the other Light Furies existing. This franchise does a great job book ending its movies and its moments. All those repetitious lines must have made How to Train Your Dragon super easy to write. Just kidding, nuance is everything. Words aren’t the only thing repeated. So are gestures, like Hiccup touching Toothless’ head or Toothless drawing for the Light Fury. There’s also one very important address slipped into the TV show. If you’re expecting it to be the house number for the animation classroom all the animators worked out of originally, you’re watching the wrong video.
