The eruption of Mount Ruang on Ruang Island, North Sulawesi, has prompted Indonesian authorities to issue evacuation orders for hundreds of villagers. With multiple eruptions occurring since Tuesday night, the situation has raised concerns about the volcano potentially collapsing into the sea and triggering a tsunami.

At 725 meters (2,400 feet) high, Mount Ruang has spewed lava and ash plumes thousands of feet into the air, prompting the country’s volcanology agency to elevate the volcano alert to the highest level. Officials are cautioning people to stay at least 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) away from the peak due to fears of a partial collapse into the water, which could replicate the events of 1871.

Being a stratovolcano, Mount Ruang exhibits a conical shape and steep sides due to its formation from viscous, slow-flowing lava. This type of volcano is known for its explosive eruptions caused by gas buildup in the magma.

Dramatic footage captured during the eruptions showcases gray ash plumes ascending into the sky alongside streams of glowing lava and lightning strikes. Villagers have been seen undergoing evacuation procedures, with Ruang Island's approximately 800 residents temporarily relocating to nearby Tagulandang Island. However, officials have issued warnings for those on Tagulandang to remain vigilant for falling incandescent rocks and hot cloud surges.
