The usually boar into the wood and create a hole like 3/8 drill bit and then they will run parrallel with the grain of the wood. They bore into the wood lay an egg then wall it up, lay another egg and then wall that up basically making compartments for the eggs which go through cycles including larvae until they bore out carpenter bees.
