The bus accident that killed Johann Hölzel went largely unnoticed in the English-speaking world, but in the Strasses and Allees of his native Vienna, February 6, 1998, was something like the Day die Musik .

Johann Hölzel, after all, was not the name by which most of the world knew him. To pop fans from Germany to Japan, he was Falco, the man behind “Rock Me Amadeus” and “Der Kommisar” and possibly the biggest star to emerge from Austria since Herr Mozart himself.

He had a personal training session on the day he died, and then he went to a bar called The Tourist Disco. The waitress said he was drinking too much and she had to cut him off. He went to the parking lot and was reported to have sat in his Mitsubishi Montero for one hour.

He was reported to look like a total mess with his hair and clothes disheveled. Falco was depressed because a girl friend had broken up with a few weeks before. Suddenly he left the parking lot with a great deal of speed and a bus was driving faster then the 80 km an hour speed limit.

The bus was going more like 100 km an hour. Falco saw the bus, and it was too late to do anything. The bus driver saw Falco, but it was too late to change course.
