These step-by-step instructions and in-depth video explain how to replace the tail light bulbs on a 2016 Ford F-150 XLT, and replacement procedures will be similar on 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020 F-150 models. Replacing a burned-out, flickering, dim, or otherwise failing tail light not only keeps you from getting a traffic ticket, and helps communicate your vehicle’s presence and intended direction to other drivers, keeping you safer on the road. If you notice that your 2015 to 2020 F-150’s tail light bulbs are not working or are not as bright as they should be, you should replace both tail light bulbs as soon as possible to ensure your vehicle remains visible and safe.

Your Ford F-150’s tail lights help alert other drivers that you are in front of them, and are required to keep your truck legal and safe on the road. Some tail light bulbs have a second filament that illuminates your brake lights, tail lights, or turn signals for proper visibility and safe driving. It’s recommended that you replace both of the tail light bulbs on your 2015 to 2020 F-150 at the same time — even if only one bulb has failed — since the bulbs are likely the same age and can become dim or burn out around the same time. These detailed instructions will help you perform a tail light bulb replacement on your 2015 to 2020 Ford F-150 to keep you, your truck, and others safe on the road.

Park on a level surface… and lower the tailgate.
On the inside of the tail light assembly, you’ll see two 5/16 bolts that can be removed with a ratchet and socket.
Once the bolts are removed, pull the assembly straight back toward the rear of the truck to protect and disengage the plastic tabs holding it in place.
To keep from having to prop up or hold the assembly and change the bulb at the same time, turn both bulb sockets counterclockwise to remove them from the assembly… then set the assembly aside.
Work the bulb you need to change gently out of its socket.
Install the new bulb in the socket.
Lift the assembly back into position… and secure the sockets by turning them clockwise back into place.
Align the tabs of the assembly… and press it in firmly toward the front of the truck.
Reinstall the two bolts with your ratchet and socket.
Close the tailgate.
