These actors and actresses clearly understood the assignment when it came to creating the perfect voice for these characters. Whether it be an other-worldly anti-hero like Venom, a small-town detective like Mare Sheehan, the late Princess Diana, the Incredible Hulk, or the world famous rock star Freddie Mercury; the performers behind these roles had to dig deep when creating their voices and sometimes they weren’t working alone. Andy Serkis found inspiration for his Gollum voice from the sound his cat made hacking up hairballs. Robert Pattinson took note of his The Lighthouse co-star Willem Dafoe when trying to create the perfect Batman voice. Sometimes these stars look at other famous figures for inspiration when trying to come up with the perfect voice, such as bare knuckle fighter Bartley Gorman being Tom Hardy’s inspiration for Bane or Civil War historian Shelby Foote influencing Daniel Craig’s thick southern accent when he played Benoit Blanc in Knives Out. For a character like Venom, Tom Hardy couldn’t do the voice all by himself and has even said he can’t take full credit for the voice as the sound department as well as the late voice actor Brad Venable assisted on bringing the booming voice of Venom to life. Rami Malek didn’t do all his own singing when he played Freddie Mercury in the biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, as his ‘voice’ was actually a mix of his own, Mercury’s, and Queen cover artist Mark Martel. Even when they initially struggled to capture the right voice, these stars eventually were able to master these iconic voices and accents behind these influential characters.
