Aquarium Jack Dempsey fish tank mates. These are my top 5 favorite fish to keep with Jack Dempsey Cichlid fish. You need to remember that these are all still aquarium cichlids and can be aggressive. Breeding is the biggest threat when keeping Jack Dempsey fish with other fish.

Was the water that color when you put it in?! Even though the filter is brand new and I’m assuming the tank isn’t cycled, it wouldn’t cause the water to turn brown.

I used all these. We had an old filter we just got rid of and the water was like that and we put the new filter in. Put the water out and put new water in and it's still cloudy. OH, It must be your tap water if it's not from your substrate. Strange, but I have heard of water plants adding stuff to the water sometimes that can negatively impact tanks.

You could try Accu-Clear and put some filter floss in your filter. If the water is like that because of very small particles that might do the trick. Water change every other day if your aquarium is not cycled. Maybe there’s something releasing all that muck. Decor or even the filter if it wasn’t cleaned. It could be a bacteria and algae boom at the same time due to the color.

But how much water did you change? I would do a 60% change every day until that clears. Just be sure you match the water temperature when you do and add your seachem prime or other water conditioner and aquarium salt and replace bacteria for whatever you take out. You might also benefit from adding an api bio-chem zorb packet to your filtration system and even adding a secondary filtration, like a sponge filter.

I’m looking at the size of the fish food bottle, what’s the tank size? That could be one of the reasons ... Plus you can add a sponge around the filter intake ... that hanging on back filter is fine for a bunch of tropical fish, goldfish producing way too much waste ... just speaking from experience, that’s what I used only until adding a canister filter, I tie a pantyhose leg around the output & my water is crystal clear ... also try to keep from adding to many chemicals, the more natural the better ... it’s all trial & error, a constant balancing act.

I wonder why someone doesn’t research before they do anything. You should through that filter into the trash can and DIY sump with overhead pump right away and that will work perfectly with full functionality, btw don’t for get fill in some API quick start into the sump .

Mine was similar to this (not quite this bad) after I had spent a few weeks treating white spot. Ended up doing a 30% and then an 80% water change and it’s now crystal! Your substrate probably needs a good clean too and You may need to clean out your filter or get one that matches your tank size. Fish love bubbles too!!! It’s helps with extra oxygen level! Happy tank, happy fish! Be careful as your Ammonia levels will probably be high in that water.

Also can I ask about your tank and filter? Did you get it from Maidenhead aquatics? They both Look just like mine and if I’m honest I don’t rate the filter! I’m thinking of changing mine.

This fish food has been a game changer for me! Highly recommend for goldfish with swim bladder problems. My female Ryukin is doing so much better, even just days after starting this food with her! I bought the 2mm (the smaller kibble) and she gobbles it up. Easy ordering via Amazon, too.

Enrichment is vital to your fishes health and welfare. Adding plants to an aquarium makes them feel more secure from predation and allows them to perform their natural behaviours foraging among them. Sand is a great substrate too for allowing natural rooting behaviour. An empty tank is like a house with no furniture - it just becomes stressful and unusable space.

I have attached a study by scientists from the University of Western Australia which shows goldfish spent 90% of their time in areas of tanks enriched with plants compared to barren spaces. Not only did they spend the most time here but they were highly motivated to get to these places; they would fight very strong currents to do so.

I love that you move the rocks around each day. No animal is adapted to a sterile environment and the ponds, rivers and lakes they are originally from are never constant. I like to add different novel objects to tanks - like ping pong balls, large buttons, a new ornament for the day. Fish are generally so under stimulated and it makes me sad. We need more fish keepers like you.
