In Virginia, if you see a checkpoint and you do not want to drive through you can avoid the checkpoint prior to driving through by turning around or going around as long as you do not break any traffic laws. If you break any traffic laws or if you drive in an overly suspicious way the police can stop you the same way that they can on any road at any time.
