The leaders of China and Russia (pictured right, Xi Jinping in background, Vladimir Putin in foreground) met at the beginning of a three-day Moscow summit. 'President Putin is for me a best friend,' Xi told journalists during a statement. Russia has pivoted to being closer to China strategically since the Crimea invasion in 2014 led to tighter sanctions from the West.The pair signed a car (bottom left) produced at a new Russian factory and visited pandas (top left) at Moscow Zoo which has benefited from so-called 'panda diplomacy' after China loaned Russia two of the animals.
