This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the all-new 2023 Kia Sportage and the updated 2022 Subaru Forester. The Sportage is almost an inch longer than the Forester. The Subaru offers almost 2” more front row legroom, but the Sportage has 2” more second row legroom. Overall cargo capacity and space behind the second row goes to the Sportage with an extra 12.7 cubic feet or 359 litres behind the second row. The Kia Sportage offers three powertrains. The gas model has a 2.5L 4-cylinder with an 8-speed automatic transmission, 187 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque. The hybrid has a 1.6L turbocharged hybrid powertrain with 227 horsepower and the PHEV arriving this summer, has a targeted EV range of 51km/32 miles.
The Subaru Forester has just one engine option, a 2.5L 4-cylinder with a CVT, 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque. We’ll be focusing on the gas models in this review, as the Forester doesn’t have a hybrid or PHEV option. The Sportage has both FWD and AWD options, the Forester standard AWD.
Both the Sportage and Forester have a spacious, open and comfortable cabin. The Sportage comes with an 8” touchscreen, available 12.3” and the Forester 6.5” available 8”. The Kia has standard wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, wired on the larger screen, the Forester only wired. Other standard features the Forester and Sportage have include cloth heated front seats, a manual driver and passenger seat and 17” wheels. Features available on the higher trims include, a heated steering wheel, a Harman Kardon sound system, panoramic sunroof, driver seat memory, a power driver and passenger seat, power tailgate and heated rear seats. The Subaru Forester does not have a wireless charger or ventilated front seats, which the Sportage has. The Forester does have an available leather interior, the Sportage only cloth, leatherette or a mix of both. For fuel economy the Subaru Forester does a little bit better thanks to the CVT 9L/100 km, 26 MPG city and 7.2L, 33 MPG highway. The Kia gets 10.4L/100km, 23 MPG city and 8.5L, 28 MPG highway. The Kia Sportage AWD starts at $30,395 CAD/$27,790 USD and the top trim $40,995 CAD/$36,790 USD. The Subaru Forester starts at $29,495 CAD/$25,195 USD and the top trim $40,595 CAD/$35,295 USD.
